A leading UK media group is recruiting for a UK Head of Tax.

It is anticipated that this role would suit a candidate stepping up to Head of Tax role for the first time rather than a seasoned Head of Tax.

The successful candidate will manage a team of 2 direct reports, reporting into the Finance Director. They will have responsibility for group's tax compliance in the UK & overseas. With the exception of the UK VAT return, all the returns are outsourced and so this will mainly involve the management and coordination with external advisors. The role will also involve strategy and advisory work and, although the group is relatively UK-centric, there would be some involvement in international tax and risk management.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Overseeing the outsourced UK & overseas corporation tax compliance process to ensure that returns taxes are paid and returns are submitted on a timely and accurate basis.
  • Responding to Tax Authority enquiries and audits and maintain risk status in line with Group risk appetite
  • Forecasting the UK group's corporation tax payment position and ensuring all payments are made accurately and on time.
  • Ensuring the Group complies with withholding tax obligations.
  • Carrying out the annual Senior Accounting Officer process including testing of internal controls
  • Overseeing the annual claim for R&D expenditure credit using external support.
  • Overseeing the UK & overseas indirect tax compliance processes and reviewing the returns to
  • ensure that they are submitted and paid on a timely and accurate basis. UK returns are prepared in house and oversea returns are outsourced
  • Provision of advice on indirect taxes issues as required to ensure compliance with changes in law or supply chains
  • Identifying opportunities across all taxes for process improvements, tax savings, deferrals and risk mitigation on a proactive basis and manage subsequent implementation projects.
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors to ensure accurate analysis of tax issues and
  • mitigation of risk
  • Ensuring the Group complies with local Transfer Pricing obligations and maintains contemporaneous documentation.
  • Maintain and develop the global tax control framework including risk register, SAO documentation and documentation of process and controls to ensure adherence to Tax Strategy and policy and Corporate Criminal Offence of Facilitating Tax Evasion obligations

You will need to be a qualified accountant / tax specialist - ACA, ACCA, ATT, CTA or equivalent - with a strong background in UK corporation tax and an awareness of international taxes. Experience of working in an in-house tax role for a large/medium sized organisation would be advantageous. As above - it is anticipated that this role might suit a Number 2 or Group Tax Manager who is looking to step up into a Head of Tax role for the first time.
