Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to work within Neighbourhood services and in particular the Waste services section?

We are looking for Waste Collection Operatives to collect all aspects of waste throughout the county borough.

This will include domestic waste, trade waste and recycling which incorporates black box collections, green waste, cardboard and food

Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Carry out Waste collection services as agreed with your Supervisor and Waste Team Leader.
  • To liaise with the Waste Awareness Officer/Enforcement Officer where there are areas of non compliance by residents of Torfaen.
  • To contribute to raising public awareness of the twin bin scheme currently being utilised throughout Torfaen
  • To identify and provide additional assistance for members of the public who are experiencing difficulties in carrying out the separation of their waste.
  • To carry out regular audits of the number of bins, bags or boxes collected by your team, and relay this information to your Supervisor.
  • To gain an accredited professional award such as the Institute of Customer Service Communications Award Level 1. Training and advice will be offered in order to gain this award by your designated coach
  • To work with the Education Officer, which involves school visits and road shows where you will be expected to interact with students and residents of Torfaen helping and advising on any twin bin related issues.
  • Work in a safe manner, with safe working practices. Ensure that all protective clothing is worn, boots, gloves and reflective waistcoats.
  • Work within the Councils Health and Safety Policy.
  • Ensure all spillages are removed, however created, where there is evidence of Waste spillages, the location and spillage type should be reported to the Supervisor immediately.
  • Report additional bins, excessive extra plastic sacks, and contaminated bins to your Supervisor.
  • Be courteous and polite to members of the public at all times.
  • If access is impaired you must pull out the bins, bags and boxes and return to collection point. All bins, bags and boxes must be emptied
  • To work with your Team Leader when they are reversing the vehicle, Banks man training will be provided.
  • Be responsible for the Health and Safety of yourself and your colleagues.
  • Ensure safe working practices are followed
  • To distribute promotional literature as and when required.
  • Ensure that all assisted collections are carried out and waste receptacles returned to correct positions.
  • Carry out any reasonable request by your Supervisor. This may include gritting duties during the winter period, in house training will be provided.

Hours of work

  • The normal working week is one of 37 hours per week with an expectation that you will devote to the appointment, the hours necessary for the effective fulfilment of the responsibilities of the post.
  • The normal working arrangements of the post will be 7.00am- 3.00pm Monday to Thursday and 7.00am- 2.30pm on Friday (1/2 hour lunch break). Your pattern of work may be subject to change to meet the needs of the service where required.
  • You will be required to work as required on Saturday to cover the Bank Holiday Catch-ups.
